LG Display recently announced that its OLED production joint venture in Guangzhou, China, has been approved by the Chinese government. The new plant will be an 8.5-Gen (2,200 x 2,500 mm) production facility, established with 2.6 trillion Korean won in capital, of which LG Display will control a 70 percent share. The remaining 30 percent will be owned by Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development District.

 The Guangzhou OLED plant will mainly produce large-size OLED panels for TVs. LG Display will start producing 60,000 input sheets per month and will gradually ramp up to a maximum of 90,000 sheets per month. Adding that to the production capacity of 70,000 input sheets per month from LG‘s plants in Paju, the company‘s total production capacity of large-size OLED panels will reach 130,000 sheets per month by the second half of 2019. As the use of roadside digital signage increases, so have the number of studies and articles about whether the technology causes light pollution and traffic accidents. The former is somewhat in the eye of the beholder, as in New Haven, CT, last spring, when public objection to a new, 230-square-foot LED-based billboard, described by the Connecticut Mirror as “blinding,“ led to proposed new legislation for digital signage regulation. The latter, traffic accidents, have been studied at some length, with a 2015 National Institutes of Health Study concluding that while billboard-related driver distraction appeared to be minor, further study was required.

Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Foxconn, best-known as a maker of Apple’s iPhones, recently announced that it would acquire Los Angeles-based consumer products maker Belkin International, Inc., for US $866 million in cash. Belkin got its start in a garage in the 1980s, selling computer cable assemblies to local dealers and manufacturers. It now sells products in more than 50 countries. In 2013, Belkin bought router and WiFi company Linksys, and more recently acquired Wemo, a maker of “smart home” devices.

NEC Display Solutions of America has acquired German-based LED-display manufacturer S[quadrat] in order to bolster its LED strategies and product offerings, such as video walls, large-venue laser projections, and LED walls. NEC cites a growing demand from a range of industries for these kinds of large-screen signage.

NEC has been promoting the high-end S[quadrat] product portfolio for the past three years, and notes that the company produces “state-of-the art LED display systems that combine high operating safety and pioneering feature sets … with high quality components paired with an innovative design, all engineered in Germany.”

Startup company Optovate, Ltd., is a microLED maker founded in 2008 in Oxford, UK. Only recently, however, has it started to speak publicly about its technologies: microLED transfer and micro-optic light. The first development involves a microLED transfer technique to enable the extraction of microLEDs from wafers to backplanes for display and lighting applications. According to the company, this approach is scalable to very large substrates and thus provides a cost-effective route for microLED applications.

The second development is a method for producing and integrating a precision micro-catadioptric optical array that combines refraction and reflection of light from each of the microLEDs, providing directional view-angle capability, which the company describes as a significant advantage for display, backlight, and lighting applications.

Universal Display Corporation announced in January 2018 that Sharp Corporation has signed an extended and updated evaluation agreement with UDC. Under the new agreement, UDC will supply its phosphorescent OLED materials and technology to Sharp for use in the company’s OLED displays. Details and financial terms of the agreement had not been disclosed at press time.

Since last summer, various news sources reported that Sharp (acquired by Foxconn in 2016) would be creating flexible OLED panels for smartphones. Recently (January 2018) Sharp's CEO confirmed these reports, according to OLED-info, saying that the company will commence production in Q1 2018 and will introduce its new OLED smartphones in June or July of 2018. In a (presumably) related announcement about a week later, Universal Display Company and Sharp announced an updated PHOLED agreement.

LG Display continues to promote OLED TV technology, but has also been making a major statement in the OLED lighting market, with mass production commencing at its new Gen 5 OLED light-panel line in Gumi, Korea, and the introduction of a new OLED light brand, Luflex. According to LG, the Gen 5 line (1,100 mm × 1,250 mm) has been producing about 15,000 sheets per month, an approximately 30-fold increase compared to the company’s previous Gen 2 line (370 mm × 470 mm), with a monthly capacity of 4,000 sheets.

LG Display is wagering heavily on OLEDs, as underscored by its recent investment of KRW2.8 trillion into a Gen 10.5 (2,940 mm X 3,370 mm) OLED production line at its P10 plant in Paju, Korea. The obvious use for a Gen 10.5 line is OLED-based TVs. The company will also invest KRW5 trillion in a new Gen 6 (1,500 mm X 1,850 mm) plastic OLED (P-OLED) production line in Paju.

According to LG, its Gen 10.5 OLED production line will be the first of its kind in the world.  The size of mother glass produced in 10.5-generation production lines is 1.8 times larger than that in Gen 8 generation production lines.

LG does note that it will only begin mass production of OLED TVs after stabilizing the technology for producing extra-large panels and oxide backplanes for the mother glass, and determining which size large TV panels are most desired in the marketplace.
